Protecting Your Pet: Acupuncture
[ 2008-1-11 14:14:00 | By: Julia ]

The ancient art of acupuncture has been used for thousands of years on people, and now, pets can use this therapy, too! 7's Dylan Dreyer has more in this week's "Protecting your Pet."

Twelve-year-old Chula doesn't get around like she used to.

"She was very active, up until the past three years," said her owner, David Corcoran. "She's kind of slowed down, and that's largely been because of arthritis."

So, her owner decided to try acupuncture to help ease her pain.

"So up in here, I'll do a point, and it kind of relaxes these bones and muscles right here," Jeanie Kraft, an acupuncturist, said as she inserted about 10 needles.

"Energy is stuck," Kraft said. "So, by putting this needle in, it releases that energy, and it's able to flow, and it stops pain."

"You can tell she's happy," Kraft said. "She's very calm."

Next, Kraft stimulates the sensitive spots with a special magnet.

The treatment lasts about 15 minutes, and Kraft says it usually takes about three treatments to see improvement.

"After I pull the needles, I do a nice little massage, and then, I give her a , because she's good," Kraft said.

Kraft says acupuncture is not only for arthritis.

"Hip displasia, torn ligaments... I treat some dogs with allergies. I've had some dogs with renal failure, anything pretty much you would treat a human for," Kraft said.

Chula's owner is happy with the results.
