The disease is mostly due to the fact that rhinitis spreads downwards or originates from the pharynx at the beginning. Acute pharyngitis is largely caused by infection of viruses or bacteria, including viruses like Coxsackie virus, adenovirus, parainfluenza virus, rhinovirus and influenza virus as well as bacteria like beta hemolytic streptococcus, staphylococcus and Diplococcus pneumoniae.
